A*Men was created by Yves de Chirin and Jacques Huclier for Thierry Mugler and released in 1996, four years after Angel had introduced the gourmand feminine and three years before the sweet masculine would become a dominant market category. It applied Angel's central insight — that edible materials, used with ambition and precision, could create luxury fragrance of genuine power — to masculine perfumery, and it did so with a darkness that Angel's starlit sweetness had not reached.
The composition opens with bergamot, caramel, mint, and coffee before a heart of tar, lavender, and patchouli introduces elements that have no conventional place in fine fragrance. The tar accord is the fragrance's signature — not crude or industrial, but asphalt in summer heat, slightly sweet, warm, slightly disquieting. Around it, caramel and coffee provide gourmand richness; lavender and woody notes maintain a connection to masculine fragrance tradition that prevents the composition from reading as eccentric rather than bold. The base of tonka bean, musk, and sandalwood brings the whole together into something that is simultaneously strange and entirely wearable.
A*Men established the dark gourmand masculine as a category before the category had a name. The combination of sweet, edible materials with something industrial or challenging — the contrast that makes the sweetness feel earned rather than merely pleasant — has since been replicated across hundreds of releases. Within the Mugler archive, it stands alongside Angel as evidence that the house's philosophy — fragrance as provocation, as genuine creative risk — was not limited to a single formula or a single gender.

Application Tips
Apply A*Men to pulse points and allow it to build on your skin over time. The caramel and vanilla notes are particularly strong initially but give way to a deeper patchouli and amber base that lingers through the day.
