The Story

Acqua di Parma Colonia was first created in 1916, making it one of the oldest continuously produced fragrances in existence. Born in the Emilian city of Parma — a place better known for its ham and its Parmigiano than its perfumery — the fragrance was originally a barbershop cologne of the kind that Italian gentlemen splashed on after a morning shave. It was never intended to be a luxury product. It became one through the quiet accumulation of reputation: Cary Grant wore it, the Duke of Windsor wore it, and by the mid-twentieth century Colonia had become the unofficial scent of a certain kind of understated, continental elegance that money could not buy but certainly helped.

The composition is, in the tradition of the Italian cologne, built on hesperidic simplicity. Sicilian citrus — lemon, sweet orange, bergamot — dominates the opening with a brightness that is immediately recognisable and impossible to mistake for anything else. Lavender, rosemary, and verbena in the heart provide an aromatic, herbal quality that lifts the citrus out of cologne territory and into something more structured. The base of vetiver, sandalwood, and patchouli gives Colonia a warmth and depth unusual for the genre — most colognes evaporate within minutes, but Colonia persists, its woody base extending the citrus into a drydown that can last for hours. It is a cologne that behaves like a fragrance, and that distinction is central to its appeal.

Colonia's significance lies less in innovation than in endurance. It has survived two world wars, the rise and fall of the powerhouse era, the aquatic revolution, the niche explosion, and the gourmand takeover without ever being reformulated into irrelevance. When Acqua di Parma was acquired by LVMH in 2001, the brand was repositioned as a luxury house, but Colonia itself was left largely untouched — because, as it turned out, it did not need to change. It remains the definitive Italian citrus fragrance and the proof that simplicity, when executed with sufficient quality, is its own form of sophistication.

Application Tips

Apply one or two sprays to the pulse points. The citrus opening will be most noticeable for the first hour, but the woody base notes will linger through the day. This fragrance works best in moderate temperatures and can read as slightly overpowering in very warm weather.
