The name promises a celebration — a ball, somewhere sunlit and exuberant — but Bal d'Afrique stages that gathering in the negative space instead. Jérôme Epinette built the composition around buchu and African marigold, two notes that give the opening a green, slightly medicinal edge, like walking through a herb garden rather than a tropical resort. Violet and cyclamen layer a cool, powdery skin-scent over that greenness, while vetiver and cedar pull everything down into dry earth.
It is a fragrance that contradicts its own title. Not loud, not sweet, not the kind of scent that announces itself across a room. It is what you notice on someone an hour into a gathering — pressed flowers and cool stone, a celebration that chose restraint over spectacle. Byredo, only three years old in 2009, was still building its Scandinavian voice, and this is one of its clearest statements: emotion translated into something deliberately quiet.

Vetiver

This versatile note has long been favored for its ability to blend seamlessly into complex compositions without overpowering other ingredients.
Violet
Violet’s scent is a complex blend of sweetness and earthiness, reminiscent of fresh petals with undertones of damp soil. Derived from both natural and synthetic sources, it captures the essence of spring gardens and old-world elegance, evoking memories of vintage perfumery and modern sophistication.
Application Tips
The buchu and marigold top is the most distinctive part, and it fades within two hours — so if that green, medicinal edge is what draws you, spray it closer to the skin where it lingers. The vetiver-cedar base is dry and quiet; two sprays at the pulse points will carry the powdery violet through a full day without filling a room.

Jérôme Epinette is a French perfumer born and raised in Burgundy who earned a Master's degree in Biochemistry before training at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery. He joined Robertet's Paris office in 2003 and helped launch its New York Creative Center in 2006, going on to design fragrances for Victoria's Secret and L'Occitane as well as niche houses like Atelier Cologne. He is best known for his extensive collaboration with Olivia Giacobetti and Ben Gorham on the Byredo line, where he personally designed most of the fragrances, and later created Electric Rhubarb for Floral Street in collaboration with the Chelsea Flower Show.
