The Story

Burberry launched Her in 2018, and Francis Kurkdjian's composition did something that British fashion houses had been attempting for years: it created a fragrance that felt specifically, unmistakably London. Not the London of Penhaligon's — all oak-panelled gentlemen's clubs and Jermyn Street propriety — but a younger, more vibrant city: red buses, berry-stained lips, and the faintly sweet air outside the street-food stalls in Borough Market. The fragrance was built on dark berries — blackberry, blueberry, raspberry — treated not as decorative top notes but as the composition's structural foundation, and the result was unlike anything the mainstream feminine market had encountered.

The composition opens with a burst of strawberry, raspberry, and blackcurrant that is immediately, unmistakably fruity — bright, slightly tart, and free of the synthetic sharpness that often undermines berry notes in perfumery. The heart introduces violet, jasmine, and a subtle tea rose that provides just enough floral softness to prevent the berries from reading as a candle or a sweet. The base of musk, amber, cashmeran, and dry woods adds warmth and depth, transforming the fresh fruitiness of the opening into something richer and more enveloping as the fragrance develops. Kurkdjian's achievement is in the berries' persistence: they remain legible throughout the fragrance's life, slowly darkening and warming rather than disappearing beneath the base notes. The effect is of fruit that ages rather than evaporates.

Burberry Her became one of the brand's most successful fragrance launches and established the berry-forward feminine as a viable mainstream category. Its significance extends beyond its sales to what it represented for Burberry's brand identity: a fragrance that referenced contemporary London rather than the heritage tweeds and trench coats that had defined the brand for decades. Kurkdjian understood that Britishness, like any national identity, was not fixed but evolving, and Her captured a version of it that felt fresh, unpretentious, and genuinely wearable. In a market dominated by French and Italian houses, it quietly made the case that London had its own olfactory vocabulary — and that vocabulary was written in berries.

Application Tips

Apply Burberry Her with two sprays to capture both its bright fruity top notes and its warm musky base. The moderate longevity means it will evolve over time, so layering lightly is key for a balanced scent experience.

Francis Kurkdjian portrait
My creations are an invitation to choose the scent that suits you daily, because I like the idea that each woman and man can express a part of themselves through perfume.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian was born in 2009 from the encounter between Francis Kurkdjian, a renowned perfumer with scores of successful creations to his name, and Marc Chaya, Co-founder and President of the fragrance house. At only 24, Francis Kurkdjian composed his first perfume, "Le Male" by Jean Paul Gaultier, an international best-seller and game-changer of its time. Instead of relying on a very promising start to his career, he decided, as a precursor, to explore new possibilities and give olfactory creation a new artistic dimension. In keeping with his visionary outlook, in 2001 he set up his tailor-made perfume workshop, against the general tendency of perfume democratization, while constantly putting his know-how and sensibility at the service of the greatest fashion designers (Rick Owens, Hedi Slimane, Riccardo Tisci, Alber Elbaz or John Galliano), as well as the most iconic houses (Dior, Guerlain or Saint-Laurent). From 2003, artists like Sophie Calle, Christian Rizzo or Sarkis called on him to compose his first olfactory compositions - the starting point of his quest to break down the boundaries between different fields and the senses. In 2008, he was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
