The Story

When Maison Margiela launched the Replica line in 2012, creative director John Galliano proposed a thesis that would reshape how consumers thought about fragrance: that a perfume could function as a memory rather than an identity. Each Replica fragrance was named after a specific sensory experience — Jazz Club, Beach Walk, Lazy Sunday Morning — and packaged with a descriptive label specifying the setting, date, and feeling being evoked. By the Fireplace, created by Marie Salamagne and released in 2015, became the collection's defining statement: a fragrance that smelled unmistakably of chestnuts roasting over a wood fire on a cold evening.

Salamagne's composition is remarkable for its specificity. The opening of clove, pink pepper, and orange flower provides a spicy warmth that sets the scene before the central accord arrives: a smoky, woody blend of guaiac wood, Peru balsam, and chestnut that conjures not just fire but the particular quality of a domestic hearth — the crackle of dry wood, the sweet char of roasting nuts, the way smoke clings to wool. The base of vanilla, cashmeran, and benzoin wraps the smoke in a soft, creamy sweetness that mimics the sensation of being warm indoors while cold presses against the windows. Every element serves the narrative. There are no abstract accords, no materials deployed for technical interest alone. The fragrance is, in the most literal sense, an illustration.

By the Fireplace became one of the best-selling niche fragrances of the late 2010s and helped establish Replica as a commercial force within the LVMH portfolio. Its broader significance lies in the permission it gave the industry to treat fragrance as storytelling rather than pure aesthetics. The concept-first approach — name the memory, then build the smell — inverted the traditional creative process, in which a perfumer composes freely and marketing applies a narrative afterward. Replica demonstrated that consumers were willing to buy a feeling rather than a brand identity, and that transparency about what a fragrance was trying to be could itself become a form of luxury. By the Fireplace is the collection's warmest and most universally beloved entry — proof that the most sophisticated concept is worthless without a composition that delivers on its promise.

Application Tips

Apply By the Fireplace in layers for best effect — it blooms slowly over time. The spicy top notes are brief but impactful, while the warm base notes linger close to skin, so keep reapplications light once you’ve built up the scent on your skin.
