Comme des Garçons 2 was created by Mark Buxton for Rei Kawakubo's fragrance line and released in 1999 as a companion to the original Comme des Garçons fragrance. The house had launched its fragrance division in 1994 with a composition built on ink, metal, and industrial materials — a deliberate rejection of the conventions of fine fragrance that was as conceptually coherent as anything in Kawakubo's fashion work. Comme des Garçons 2 continued that project while approaching it from a different angle: not industrial but abstract, not challenging but demanding.
The composition uses white florals — lily, white rose, magnolia — filtered through a lens of clean musk and cedar that strips away their sweetness and replaces it with something cooler and more architectural. The florals are recognisable but not quite themselves: present at a remove, as though encountered through glass or in a reproduction rather than directly. The overall effect is of whiteness as a colour has a smell — the fragrance of bleached linen or fresh paper, but with a floral warmth that prevents it from reading as merely clean.
Comme des Garçons established, through a decade of releases culminating in the Incense series, that fragrance could be a site of the same conceptual inquiry as fashion, architecture, or visual art. Comme des Garçons 2's achievement was to demonstrate that this inquiry did not require difficulty — that a fragrance could be beautiful, wearable, and entirely original simultaneously. It remains one of the most influential white florals in niche perfumery, cited by perfumers who were working through their own questions about what abstraction in fragrance could mean.

Application Tips
One to two sprays is sufficient — this fragrance projects well from the start but takes about 30 minutes for all layers to fully integrate. The aldehydic top note fades within an hour, so it's best suited for daytime or early evening.
