The Story

When Davidoff released Cool Water in 1988, perfumer Pierre Bourdon introduced a molecule called dihydromyrcenol to mainstream masculine perfumery and, in doing so, invented a genre. The aquatic masculine had no precedent. Men's fragrance in the late 1980s was dominated by powerhouses — Drakkar Noir, Polo, Kouros — compositions that announced their wearer from across a room. Cool Water proposed something radically different: a fragrance that evoked open water, mineral freshness, and clean air. It smelled like the outdoors had been distilled into a bottle, and it arrived at precisely the moment when the culture was ready to trade bombast for understatement.

Bourdon built the composition around a marine-aromatic accord that balanced the ozonic freshness of dihydromyrcenol and calone with traditional masculine materials. The opening of sea water, mint, lavender, and green notes creates an immediate sense of cool, wet air. The heart introduces jasmine, neroli, and geranium — materials that read as clean rather than floral in this context — while the base of sandalwood, cedar, musk, amber, and tobacco provides a warm, woody anchor that keeps the fragrance from dissolving into pure transparency. The genius of the formula lies in its seamlessness: no single note announces itself, and the transitions between phases are so smooth that the fragrance seems to exist as a single, unbroken sensation from first spray to final drydown.

Cool Water's influence on the industry was seismic. It launched the aquatic category that would dominate men's perfumery for the following decade, directly inspiring Acqua di Gio, L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme, and hundreds of less distinguished imitators. It remains one of the best-selling men's fragrances in history, with cumulative sales in the billions. Critics who dismiss it as dated or generic are confusing cause with effect: Cool Water does not smell like everything that came after it. Everything that came after it smelled like Cool Water.

Application Tips

One spray to the chest holds up through a workday; the marine top notes fade within two hours but the sandalwood-musk base carries it the rest of the day. Layers well under a jacket.

Pierre Bourdon portrait

As Edmond Roudnitska’s only student, Pierre Bourdon was informed early on by the philosophy that perfumes should be created as works of art. With this in mind, Pierre went on to revolutionize perfume trends in the 1980s with his men’s perfume “Cool Water” for Davidoff. That was when he met Frédéric Malle. Having realized that they shared the same vision of perfume making, the two became like family to one another. It was obvious to Frédéric, when he created Editions de Parfums, that Pierre should compose its first perfume, Iris Poudre.
