Launched in 2004 by Penhaligon's and crafted by Michael Pickthall, Douro is a fragrance that captures the essence of a fresh, invigorating journey through a lush landscape. The opening notes of lemon, lime, and mandarin orange are crisp and energizing, while lavender and basil add an aromatic depth. As the scent evolves, geranium and lily-of-the-valley introduce a soft floral heart, which is then grounded by oakmoss and labdanum. Sandalwood and musk provide a warm, earthy base that keeps Douro from feeling too light.

Michael Pickthall was a senior perfumer at IFF before he and his brother Terence left to found Contemporary Perfumers Ltd (CPL) in 1971, which grew into the largest privately owned fragrance house in the UK. He created four fragrances for Penhaligon's: Lily of the Valley (1976), Bluebell (1978), Elisabethan Rose (1984), and Douro (2004).
