The Story

Christine Nagel's H24 by Hermès was launched in 2021 as the brand’s first men's fragrance in 15 years since Jean-Claude Ellena's Terre d'Hermès, making it one of the most anticipated launches of that year. The composition opens with a bright aromatic and green accord, featuring bergamot and petitgrain, which gives way to a soft spicy heart of saffron and cardamom. This leads into a warm base of amber, balsamic notes, and woody accords, creating a scent that is both fresh and enveloping.

H24 has become not just a fragrance but a lightning rod in the broader conversation about gendered perfumery. Critics have questioned Nagel's ability to compose 'masculine' fragrances, a criticism that some commentators have called out as bordering on misogynistic. Despite these debates, H24 stands as a proof of its creator’s vision and the brand's enduring legacy.

Application Tips

Apply two sprays to the pulse points; the aromatic and green top notes are bright but give way to a warm, enveloping base that blooms over time. This fragrance reads best close to skin rather than across a room, making it ideal for daytime wear.

Christine Nagel portrait
I think of fragrance as fabric — it should drape beautifully around whoever wears it.

Christine Nagel is the in-house perfumer at Hermès, succeeding the legendary Jean-Claude Ellena in 2016. A graduate of ISIPCA and trained at Charabot in Grasse, she brings decades of experience to one of perfumery's most prestigious creative positions. Nagel's work for Hermès — including Twilly, Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver, and the Jardin series — continues the house's tradition of understated elegance while introducing her own luminous, textured sensibility. She has also created masterpieces for Jo Malone, Narciso Rodriguez, and Valentino.
