The Story

Amouage, the Omani luxury house founded by the Sultan of Oman in 1983, had spent decades producing fragrances of restrained opulence when Interlude Man arrived in 2012 and upended every expectation. Created by perfumer Pierre Negrin, it was designed around the concept of dissonance — the deliberate clash of materials that, in traditional perfumery, would never appear in the same formula. Oud and oregano. Frankincense and amber. Kiwi and cistus. The result was a fragrance that sounded chaotic in theory but achieved, on skin, a strange and compelling harmony — like a piece of atonal music that resolves, against all odds, into something beautiful.

The composition opens with a smoky, almost aggressive burst of oud, bergamot, oregano, and pimento berry that announces its intentions without subtlety. The heart introduces frankincense — Amouage's signature material, sourced from Dhofar in southern Oman — alongside myrrh, labdanum, and amber. These resins create a dense, church-incense quality that grounds the composition's wilder elements. The base of sandalwood, opopanax, castoreum, and musk provides an animalic warmth that extends the fragrance's longevity to extraordinary lengths — twelve hours or more is not uncommon. What makes Interlude Man remarkable is not its volume but its depth: there are more materials at work here than in most entire fragrance lines, and each reveals itself at different stages of the drydown.

Interlude Man became a cult favourite among fragrance enthusiasts and helped establish Amouage as the Middle Eastern house that Western collectors took most seriously. Its significance extends beyond its composition to what it represented for the broader oud genre. By the early 2010s, oud had become the most fashionable note in luxury perfumery, but most Western interpretations treated it as a single-dimensional exotic effect. Negrin used oud as one voice in a complex orchestra, demonstrating that the material could be deployed with intellectual ambition rather than mere novelty. Interlude Man proved that maximalism and sophistication were not mutually exclusive — and that the most interesting fragrances are often those that refuse to make sense on paper.

Application Tips

Given its enormous sillage and eternal longevity, one or two sprays are sufficient. The spicy top notes will make an immediate impact, while the woody base continues to unfold throughout the day. Best enjoyed in cooler weather when its warmth is most appreciated.

Pierre Negrin portrait

The son of scent traders, Pierre Negrin learned his art in a laboratory rather than a school. His years spent in Mexico and New York influenced his work for Amouage, which tends to be cosmopolitan and pragmatic, capturing the complexity of the densest balsams and absolutes.
