Sycomore was created by Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake for the Chanel Les Exclusifs collection and released in 2008. Les Exclusifs had been conceived as Chanel's statement about what the house could do when freed from the requirement to produce fragrances for the broadest possible audience — a collection that would sit behind the counter at Chanel boutiques, available to customers who sought them out, built to a standard that the main line's commercial constraints did not always permit. Sycomore was among the collection's finest expressions of that freedom.
The composition builds its entire architecture around vetiver — specifically, the smoky, slightly woody quality of Haitian vetiver absolute — supported by sandalwood, cedar, and a quietly floral accord of iris that provides elegance without distraction. The vetiver is not the vetiver of Guerlain's masculine classic — earthy, slightly bitter, grounded — but something cooler and drier, more abstract, the smell of wood smoke rather than soil. White musks in the base extend the composition into something that moves, over hours, from the smoky opening toward something warmer and more intimate.
Sycomore established a benchmark for the vetiver fragrance in the context of high-end designer perfumery. It demonstrated that the Les Exclusifs collection's ambition was genuine — that Chanel, given the freedom to do so, could produce fragrances that competed with the finest niche offerings on purely olfactory terms. For many who encountered it, it provided a first understanding of what vetiver could be as a primary material rather than a base note: not merely earthy depth, but an entire aesthetic built on the particular kind of cool, austere elegance that only a few materials in perfumery's vocabulary can deliver.

Application Tips
Apply Sycomore to pulse points for a steady warmth that builds over time. The fresh spicy top notes are fleeting but essential, so ensure they have a chance to bloom before the woody base takes hold.
