Mon Guerlain

Mon Guerlain was created by Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk for Guerlain and released in 2017, with Angelina Jolie as the face of a campaign built around the theme of personal freedom — the idea that modern femininity was defined not by prescribed elegance but by the liberty to be exactly oneself. The name was a declaration of possession and identity simultaneously: not Guerlain's vision of a woman, but the woman's vision of Guerlain.

The composition is built on a lavender-vanilla axis that places two materials with long heritage in fine fragrance in direct and intimate contact. Bergamot and lavender open with a freshness that leans slightly into aromatic territory without crossing into the masculine associations those materials might otherwise carry; jasmine absolute adds a floral warmth that softens the lavender's edge; Tahitian vanilla and sandalwood in the base create the depth and comfort that grounds the whole composition. The formula is not complex in the way that Shalimar or Mitsouko are complex. It achieves its effect through proportion and clarity.

Mon Guerlain arrived at a moment when Guerlain was navigating the tension between its extraordinary heritage and the expectations of a contemporary audience that had not grown up with that heritage. It succeeded in speaking to both. Within the house's existing audience, the lavender-vanilla structure connected to the tradition of Jicky — Guerlain's oldest fragrance, which had been built on exactly those materials over a century earlier. For a newer audience, it offered something warmly approachable and immediately beautiful, with none of the weight that Guerlain's name occasionally brings. That double register — simultaneously contemporary and deeply rooted — is the most difficult thing a legacy house can achieve.
