The Story

Launched in 1904 by Guerlain and crafted by Jacques Guerlain, Mouchoir de Monsieur is a composition that encapsulates the essence of early twentieth-century sophistication. The fragrance opens with bright citrus notes like bergamot and lemon verbena, which are immediately tempered by aromatic lavender and neroli. This vibrant opening gives way to a heart filled with powdery florals such as jasmine, rose, and iris, before settling into a base of vanilla, patchouli, cinnamon, amber, and oakmoss. The result is a blend that feels both fresh and warm, evoking the refined elegance of its time.

Application Tips

Mouchoir de Monsieur has a nuanced opening that fades within an hour, so apply it twice for a full experience. The powdery and floral heart notes are best enjoyed close to skin rather than across a room, making it ideal for daytime wear where its warm base can unfold gradually.

Jacques Guerlain portrait
When I created Shalimar, I was thinking of the great love stories — of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.

Jacques Guerlain is one of the greatest perfumers who ever lived — the man who gave the world Shalimar, Mitsouko, L'Heure Bleue, and Vol de Nuit. As the third-generation perfumer of the House of Guerlain, he elevated the family craft into high art. Working in the legendary Guerlain laboratory on the Champs-Élysées, he drew inspiration from love, literature, and travel to create fragrances of unprecedented emotional depth. Shalimar, inspired by the gardens of the Taj Mahal and his love affair with a woman whose identity remains mysterious, is perhaps the most celebrated perfume in history.
