Initio Parfums Privés launched Oud for Greatness in 2018, and the fragrance rapidly became one of the most commercially successful oud compositions in Western perfumery. The brand, founded in 2015 with a concept built around the supposed psychoactive properties of certain fragrance materials, had positioned itself at the intersection of luxury and pseudoscience — a marketing approach that raised eyebrows among purists but resonated powerfully with a consumer base increasingly interested in fragrance as experience rather than mere adornment. Whatever one makes of the conceptual framework, the composition by Pierre Gueros delivered something undeniable: an oud fragrance of immediate, almost aggressive beauty.

The composition opens with a blast of agarwood — synthetic oud treated to emphasise its smoky, medicinal, slightly barnyard qualities — accompanied by saffron and nutmeg that add warmth and spice. The oud is not subtle: it dominates the opening minutes with a force that separates enthusiasts from the uninitiated within seconds. The heart introduces lavender and patchouli, which provide an unexpected aromatic freshness that lifts the oud out of pure Middle Eastern homage and into something more cosmopolitan. Oud for Greatness arrived at the peak of oud's mainstream moment and, rather than offering a gentle introduction to the material, leaned into its most polarising qualities — and was rewarded with enormous sales. Its significance lies in demonstrating that Western consumers were ready not just for oud-adjacent fragrances — the gentle, sanitised oud-roses that had dominated the 2010s — but for compositions where oud functioned as the unambiguous protagonist.
