Philippine Houseboy
“Philippine Houseboy by Etat Libre d'Orange is a Aromatic Fougere fragrance for women and men”
The Quick Read
Respected, if divisive — a aromatic, warm spicy composition with a citrus undertone. Voted best for spring and summer wear — and genuinely unisex.

Philippine Houseboy by Etat Libre d'Orange, launched in 2012 and crafted by perfumer Ralf Schwieger, is an aromatic fougere that challenges traditional notions of fragrance. It opens with a bright citrus-and-spice accord that is both fresh and warm, leading into a heart of green notes and coconut that adds unexpected depth. The base brings together cinnamon and other spicy elements, creating a composition that is daringly complex yet cohesive.

Application Tips
This fragrance has a strong presence but remains close to the skin. Apply two sprays for a balanced experience — the citrus notes will fade within an hour, allowing the spicy and aromatic base to shine through. It reads better in cooler settings where its warmth can be fully appreciated.

Founding perfumer · 32 fragrances

Ralf Schwieger once took part in a perfume contest that Frédéric Malle had staged for young perfumers. Frédéric sampled their perfumes one by one, blindfolded, until he reached Ralph’s sketch of what was to become Lipstick Rose, and Ralf was chosen to join Editions de Parfums. Having spent his childhood in Germany exploring forests and absorbing all of their unusual smells, Ralf is prone to creating perfumes with unexpected personalities. He describes his attitude to perfume making as a game in two parts, whose first is intellectual or conceptual, and whose second is a lengthier one of sensory research. His perfumes, as a result, are both cerebral and intuitive.
