Henri Robert built Pour Monsieur in 1955 as a chypre — a structure that, at the time, belonged almost exclusively to women's fragrance. But this isn't a floral chypre. Basil, coriander, cardamom, and ginger create a sharp, kitchen-bright herbal top, while Sicilian lemon and petitgrain keep the citrus bitter rather than sweet. Beneath that, oakmoss, vetiver, and cedar pull everything into dark, damp earth.
The result reads less like a barbershop and more like the sharp green bite of crushed herbs meeting a forest floor after cold rain. Chanel had built its name on women's fashion and women's scent; Pour Monsieur extended that architectural complexity to a man who wanted structure without florals. Moderate sillage, moderate longevity: it stays close, the kind of scent you notice on a collar rather than across a room.

Application Tips
The herbal top — basil, coriander, cardamom — softens within the first hour, so if that green bite is what draws you, a reapplication or a spray on a scarf keeps it alive. The oakmoss and vetiver base does the slow, quiet work after that, sitting close to skin. Two sprays at the wrists is enough; this isn't a projection piece.

Henri Robert was a French perfumer and chemist born in 1899 in Grasse, trained by his father Joseph Robert, chief perfumer at Chiris, where Henri began working in 1919 alongside Vincent Roubert, Ernest Beaux, and Henri Alméras. At Parfums d'Orsay he created Le Dandy in 1923, and after François Coty's death in 1934 he became Chief Perfumer at Coty, creating Muguet de Bois in tribute to Coty's favorite flower. In 1952 he succeeded Ernest Beaux as Chief Perfumer at Chanel, where he created Pour Monsieur, No. 19, and Cristalle. He was the uncle of perfumer Guy Robert and great-uncle of François Robert, and died in 1987.
