Santal 33
“Santal 33 by Le Labo is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for women and men”
The Quick Read
Respected, if divisive — a woody, sponsored composition with a powdery undertone. Voted best for year-round wear — and genuinely unisex.

Le Labo launched Santal 33 in 2011 as a New York City exclusive, the kind of fragrance the brand positioned as a rejection of mass luxury—no celebrity faces, no department store counters, bottles mixed in-store on demand. The inspiration was deliberately unglamorous: the American West, the smell of open land, cedar smoke, dry leather, and the particular quality of light in the high desert.
The composition, created by Frank Voelkl, opens with cardamom and iris before revealing a heart of violet and ambrette that softens what follows. The base is the fragrance's true identity: cedarwood, sandalwood, papyrus, leather, and musk woven into an accord that reads as woodsmoke, dry earth, and something almost architectural. It is neither masculine nor feminine in any conventional sense.
What happened next is difficult to explain through the fragrance alone. Santal 33 became, through a combination of cultural placement, word of mouth, and genuine olfactory distinctiveness, the signature scent of a particular generation of culturally fluent urban professionals. It was everywhere without being advertised anywhere. For some that ubiquity diminished it; for others it confirmed what the formula always contained—a smell genuinely unlike anything that came before it.

Application Tips
Two sprays is sufficient — the woody opening is immediate but builds on skin over time. The powdery heart and warm base notes bloom gradually, so it’s best to apply in the morning for an all-day presence. Avoid layering with heavy colognes as Santal 33 shines brightest when worn alone.
