The Story

Shalimar was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1925, reportedly inspired by the Shalimar Gardens of Lahore — the word itself means "abode of love" in Sanskrit. Whether the origin story is literal or romantic embellishment matters less than what the fragrance achieved: the first great oriental, a composition that established an entire tradition of perfumery built on the interplay of citrus brightness and deep, resinous warmth.

The structure is a study in contrast. Bergamot and citrus open with remarkable freshness, creating a transparency that makes the development feel like revelation rather than transition. Iris, rose, and jasmine build a floral heart of great refinement before the base arrives: opoponax, civet, tonka bean, and vanilla constructed around a dense amber accord that was, at the time, unlike anything previously produced in French perfumery. The civet was particularly bold — animalic, carnal, deeply human — creating a base that felt intimate in a way that many contemporaries considered scandalous.

What Shalimar established was not merely a formula but a philosophy: that luxury fragrance could be simultaneously radiant and dark, refined and primitive, structured and deeply sensual. The oriental tradition that followed — from the great Guerlain compositions through Opium, Obsession, and everything they influenced — is built on the foundation Shalimar laid. A century after its creation, it remains in continuous production, reformulated and adjusted but never replaced, because nothing has yet improved on the central idea.

Application Tips

One or two sprays are sufficient to capture the essence of Shalimar Extrait. The citrus opening is bright but fleeting, so allow it to settle before moving on with your day. This fragrance reads best close to skin rather than across a room, making it perfect for intimate moments and quiet evenings.

Jacques Guerlain portrait
When I created Shalimar, I was thinking of the great love stories — of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.

Jacques Guerlain is one of the greatest perfumers who ever lived — the man who gave the world Shalimar, Mitsouko, L'Heure Bleue, and Vol de Nuit. As the third-generation perfumer of the House of Guerlain, he elevated the family craft into high art. Working in the legendary Guerlain laboratory on the Champs-Élysées, he drew inspiration from love, literature, and travel to create fragrances of unprecedented emotional depth. Shalimar, inspired by the gardens of the Taj Mahal and his love affair with a woman whose identity remains mysterious, is perhaps the most celebrated perfume in history.
