The Story

Dolce & Gabbana launched The One in 2006, and the fragrance arrived with a brief that seemed almost wilfully modest: create a warm, spicy masculine for evening wear. No conceptual provocation, no bottle shaped like a body part, no campaign built on controversy. Just warmth, elegance, and a composition that would make a man feel confident at dinner. What made The One remarkable was not its ambition but its execution. Perfumers Roland Fraguas and Olivier Pescheux delivered a tobacco-amber-ginger accord of such effortless sophistication that it immediately became the reference point for the warm-spicy category — the fragrance against which every subsequent attempt was measured.

The composition opens with grapefruit, coriander, and basil in a crisp, herbal-citrus introduction that feels polished without being cold. The heart introduces cardamom, ginger, and orange blossom — a combination that creates a warm, spiced sweetness reminiscent of chai tea or mulled wine. Cedar in the heart provides a dry, woody backbone that prevents the spices from becoming diffuse. The base of tobacco, amber, labdanum, and cedarwood deepens the warmth into something rich and long-lasting, close to the skin and quietly radiating. The overall effect is of understated luxury: The One never shouts, never projects aggressively, and never draws attention to any single ingredient. It simply smells expensive.

The One became one of Dolce & Gabbana's most enduring masculines, its popularity sustained not by hype cycles or influencer campaigns but by consistent word-of-mouth recommendation. Its significance lies in what it proved about the market: that there was a substantial audience for masculine fragrance that prioritised refinement over novelty, warmth over freshness, and intimacy over projection. In an industry increasingly driven by social-media visibility and extreme compositions, The One's quiet competence feels almost countercultural. It remains the fragrance that men who do not think about fragrance inevitably gravitate toward — and there is no higher compliment for a composition that set out to be simply, unapologetically good.

Application Tips

Apply two sprays to pulse points for a moderate sillage. The citrus top notes are bright but fade within an hour, so reapply if needed throughout the day. This fragrance reads best close to skin rather than from across a room.

I think of fragrance as fabric — it should drape beautifully around whoever wears it.

Christine Nagel is the in-house perfumer at Hermès, succeeding the legendary Jean-Claude Ellena in 2016. A graduate of ISIPCA and trained at Charabot in Grasse, she brings decades of experience to one of perfumery's most prestigious creative positions. Nagel's work for Hermès — including Twilly, Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver, and the Jardin series — continues the house's tradition of understated elegance while introducing her own luminous, textured sensibility. She has also created masterpieces for Jo Malone, Narciso Rodriguez, and Valentino.
