The story behind the bottle.

Scentsation editorial

Launched in 1996 by Tommy Hilfiger and crafted by Calice Becker, Tommy Girl became a defining scent of '90s American 'it-girl' culture. It made its debut alongside Tommy Hilfiger's high-profile return to women’s wear at London Fashion Week, featuring iconic models like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss. This floral fruity fragrance opens with bright citrus notes from mandarin orange and grapefruit, complemented by the freshness of apple tree blossom and black currant. The heart features a bouquet of white florals including honeysuckle, lily, jasmine, and magnolia, while the base anchors it with woody accords like cedar and sandalwood, along with a subtle hint of leather. Tommy Girl helped popularize the clean, sporty 'fresh' fragrance trend of the 1990s, marking a departure from the more opulent scents of the previous decade.

How to wear it

Tommy Girl is best applied lightly — the citrus and fruity top notes are bright but fleeting. The floral heart blooms gradually over a couple of hours, so it’s perfect for daytime or early evening outings where you want a fresh, clean scent that evolves throughout the day.

Flowers inside a bottle of eau de cologne

Calice Becker (Asancheyev-Becker) is a French master perfumer and director of the Givaudan Perfumery School, whose fascination with perfume began as a child asking how flowers get inside a bottle of eau de cologne.

“I like to add a dose of intrigue because nothing catches the attention of a touch of something unexpected.”
