The Story

Lancôme launched Trésor in 1990, and Sophia Grojsman's composition immediately announced itself as one of the great romantic fragrances. The brief was deceptively simple — create a fragrance about love — but Grojsman, already celebrated for her work on Eternity and Paris, understood that love in perfumery required specificity, not abstraction. She did not create a fragrance that smelled like roses and candlelight. She created a fragrance that smelled like the warmth between two people who have been together long enough to stop performing — intimate, powdery, and suffused with a golden sweetness that felt both familiar and irreplaceable.

The composition opens with rose, lilac, and peach in a combination that is immediately, unmistakably feminine. The heart deepens into iris, heliotrope, and a rich, powdery-sweet accord that gives Trésor its signature warmth — Grojsman's handling of iris here is masterful, neither austere nor cold but enveloping and almost edible. The base of sandalwood, vanilla, amber, musk, and apricot extends the sweetness into a drydown of extraordinary longevity, close to the skin and quietly radiant. The overall effect is of warmth made visible: Trésor does not project so much as glow, and its sillage trail has a quality that people consistently describe as comforting.

Trésor became one of the best-selling feminine fragrances of the 1990s and has remained in continuous production for over three decades. Its significance extends beyond sales to what it represented for feminine perfumery at a pivotal moment. Launched the same year as Angel, it offered a completely different vision of what a modern feminine could be: where Angel was dark, provocative, and category-defining, Trésor was warm, romantic, and deeply traditional — and it proved that tradition, executed with genuine emotion, could compete with innovation on equal terms. Grojsman has said that Trésor is the most personal fragrance she ever created. It smells like it.

Application Tips

Apply this fragrance lightly; it blooms beautifully on the skin over time. The vanilla and amber base notes will last throughout the day, so one or two sprays are sufficient to enjoy its full complexity.

Sophia Grojsman portrait

As a child, in Belarus, this perfume queen-to-be would run around the garden smelling roses and jasmine, leaving her toys untouched, dismissed. After studying chemistry at university, she emigrated to New York and joined the IFF laboratories where she learned the art of perfumery under the guidance of Ernest Shiftan, one of the greatest American perfumers in history. Sophia was the first perfumer to inverse classical proportions of ingredients in perfumes, having discovered that an overdose of a certain ingredient could propel it to the top of the perfume’s structure. She combined this revolutionary technique with classical perfume structures to create a truly unique aesthetic, one that was to forever shape the art of perfume making. She was also well-known for her endless fascination with rose, a flower she uses in most of her creations. At Frédéric Malle’s request, she applied herself for the first time to the art of scented candles.
