Lemon and pink pepper open bright and sharp, which makes the turn into oud and incense feel like walking from daylight into a dim, smoke-filled room. That contrast is the whole point — elemi keeps a resinous, slightly citrusy thread running through even as benzoin and leather thicken the base into something dense and warm. Patchouli and vetiver anchor it, but it's the incense that lingers longest, giving the dry-down a churchy, smoky quality rather than a sweet one.

This one projects hard once the oud and incense take over, so a single spray on clothing is usually plenty for a full evening. Give it fifteen minutes before layering anything else — the opening lemon and pepper fade fast, and what's underneath is considerably heavier.

Amandine Clerc-Marie is a French perfumer born in Grasse, where her mother also worked in the perfume industry. She trained at ISIPCA and spent more than ten years working alongside Michel Almairac before joining Firmenich in 2011 as a senior perfumer. Her work includes fragrances for Van Cleef & Arpels, Yves Saint Laurent, Lancôme, and Thierry Mugler, including Chloé's 2008 signature fragrance, La Nuit Trésor for Lancôme, Aura Mugler, and Voce Viva for Valentino. She is drawn to inspiration from movement, color, and shape, and prefers to let her work speak rather than talk about herself.
