Jean Paul Gaultier's Le Male, launched in 1995, had established the sweet-lavender masculine as a viable commercial category. Two decades later, Ultra Male arrived in 2015 and asked a simple question: what happens if you take Le Male's premise — lavender, vanilla, mint — and push every element to its absolute limit? The answer, created by Francis Kurkdjian, was a fragrance of almost cartoonish intensity: sweeter, louder, and more aggressively seductive than its predecessor, packaged in an amplified version of the iconic torso bottle and marketed with imagery that left nothing to the imagination.
The composition opens with a blast of pear, black lavender, and bergamot that reads as simultaneously fresh and sweet — a pairing that defines the fragrance's entire personality. The heart introduces clary sage, cinnamon, and floral notes that provide momentary complexity before the base arrives and takes over: vanilla, amber, cedarwood, and a dense, almost caramelised sweetness that projects with extraordinary force. Where Le Male balanced its sweetness with a cool, minty freshness that kept the composition approachable, Ultra Male eliminates the restraint entirely. It is Le Male with the volume dial removed, a composition that exists in a permanent state of Saturday night at eleven o'clock.
Ultra Male divided the fragrance community as sharply as any release of the 2010s. Detractors dismissed it as juvenile and excessive; admirers celebrated its unapologetic commitment to pleasure. Both camps were right, and both missed the point. What Kurkdjian achieved with Ultra Male was a distillation of a specific cultural moment: the mid-2010s appetite for sweet, attention-grabbing masculines that valued impact over subtlety and presence over discretion. It sold enormously, influenced a generation of clubbing fragrances, and proved that the Le Male DNA — that lavender-vanilla axis — was elastic enough to accommodate radical reinterpretation. Whether Ultra Male represents the pinnacle or the reductio ad absurdum of sweet masculine perfumery depends entirely on your taste. Its place in the conversation is beyond question.

Application Tips
Ultra Male projects well from the start but takes about an hour for its warm base notes to fully emerge. Apply two sprays initially; the spicy-aromatic top notes fade within an hour, making room for the enveloping warmth of cinnamon and vanilla. Ideal for daytime wear when you want a scent that evolves with your mood.

“My creations are an invitation to choose the scent that suits you daily, because I like the idea that each woman and man can express a part of themselves through perfume.”
Maison Francis Kurkdjian was born in 2009 from the encounter between Francis Kurkdjian, a renowned perfumer with scores of successful creations to his name, and Marc Chaya, Co-founder and President of the fragrance house. At only 24, Francis Kurkdjian composed his first perfume, "Le Male" by Jean Paul Gaultier, an international best-seller and game-changer of its time. Instead of relying on a very promising start to his career, he decided, as a precursor, to explore new possibilities and give olfactory creation a new artistic dimension. In keeping with his visionary outlook, in 2001 he set up his tailor-made perfume workshop, against the general tendency of perfume democratization, while constantly putting his know-how and sensibility at the service of the greatest fashion designers (Rick Owens, Hedi Slimane, Riccardo Tisci, Alber Elbaz or John Galliano), as well as the most iconic houses (Dior, Guerlain or Saint-Laurent). From 2003, artists like Sophie Calle, Christian Rizzo or Sarkis called on him to compose his first olfactory compositions - the starting point of his quest to break down the boundaries between different fields and the senses. In 2008, he was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

The tension between morning and midday — where the crispness of a fresh shave gives way to the warmth of a sunlit office, peppered with the subtle richness of vanilla.
