Respected, if divisive — a vanilla, woody composition with a citrus undertone. Voted best for fall and winter wear — and genuinely unisex.

Vanille Insensée by Atelier Cologne was launched in 2011 and crafted by perfumer Ralf Schwieger. This woody fragrance for both men and women opens with a bright citrus-aromatic blend of lime, citron, and coriander that cuts through the richness of vanilla and amber. The heart is anchored by vetiver and jasmine, adding a floral warmth before settling into a base of oak moss, oak, and powdery woods. This composition balances the sweetness of vanilla with an earthy, woody depth, creating a scent that feels both comforting and grounded.

Application Tips
Vanille Insensée has a rich concentration, so one or two sprays will suffice. The citrus opening fades within an hour but leaves the base notes to linger for hours. It’s best suited for evenings when you want a scent that reads close to skin rather than projecting across a room.
Ralf Schwieger
Founding perfumer · 32 fragrances

Ralf Schwieger once took part in a perfume contest that Frédéric Malle had staged for young perfumers. Frédéric sampled their perfumes one by one, blindfolded, until he reached Ralph’s sketch of what was to become Lipstick Rose, and Ralf was chosen to join Editions de Parfums. Having spent his childhood in Germany exploring forests and absorbing all of their unusual smells, Ralf is prone to creating perfumes with unexpected personalities. He describes his attitude to perfume making as a game in two parts, whose first is intellectual or conceptual, and whose second is a lengthier one of sensory research. His perfumes, as a result, are both cerebral and intuitive.
