Launched in 2014, Velvet Orchid by Tom Ford is an Oriental Floral fragrance created by Yann Vasnier, Calice Becker, Shyamala Maisondieu, and Antoine Maisondieu. This composition opens with a distinctive rum-and-honey accord that gives it a quasi-gourmand character atypical of the brand's more traditionally 'oriental floral' women's line. The honeyed warmth is balanced by a heart of black orchid, jasmine, heliotrope, hyacinth, rose oil, narcissus, magnolia, and orange blossom, before settling into a base of vanilla, myrrh, suede, sandalwood, Peru balsam, and labdanum. Velvet Orchid has garnered both praise for its richness and criticism for being overly sweet or boozy.
