When Yves Saint Laurent released Y Eau de Parfum in 2018, Dominique Ropion created a composition that attempted something the masculine market had been circling for years without fully committing to: a fresh-sweet hybrid that could work as both daytime professional fragrance and evening date scent. The EDP concentration — reformulated from the 2017 EDT — pushed the sweet facets harder, building a fragrance around sage, apple, and a generous dose of ambroxan that placed it squarely in the territory Dior Sauvage had made lucrative, while adding enough warmth and sweetness to distinguish it from Demachy's cooler, more crystalline composition.

The composition opens with apple, ginger, and bergamot in a bright, slightly spiced fruity accord that feels immediately modern and accessible. The heart introduces sage, juniper berries, and geranium — aromatic materials that provide a herbal complexity often absent from the sweet-fresh masculines that dominated the late 2010s. The sage, in particular, is handled well: sharp and slightly camphoraceous, it cuts through the sweetness with an edge that keeps the fragrance from becoming cloying. The base of ambroxan, tonka bean, cedar, fir balsam, olibanum, and vanilla creates a warm, woody-amber foundation of considerable depth and longevity. The Y EDP projects generously and evolves slowly, the opening freshness gradually ceding to the warm, resinous base over the course of several hours.

Y Eau de Parfum became one of YSL's most commercially successful masculine launches and established itself as a genuine competitor to Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel in the mainstream masculine market. Its significance lies in its execution of the fresh-sweet bridge — a balancing act that many competitors attempted and few achieved with this degree of polish. Ropion's handling of the sage-apple-ambroxan axis created something that felt familiar enough to be immediately wearable and distinctive enough to be recognisable on skin.
