Jean's story
The story
In 1946 he founded the Roure Perfumery School, serving as its first director, and developed the Jean Carles Method, a systematic approach to training perfumers that remains widely used today. Toward the end of his life he lost his sense of smell entirely, yet continued composing from memory alone, with his son Marcel smelling and commenting on his work — a feat often compared to Beethoven composing after losing his hearing. He died in 1966, and Givaudan has since dedicated a rose to his memory at the Jardin des Senteurs in Argenteuil.
