L'Air du Désert Marocain was created by Andy Tauer and released in 2005 as the second fragrance from his independent Swiss perfumery. Tauer had trained as a chemist before turning to perfumery, and the influence of that background is legible in his work: compositions built with technical precision around a small number of carefully selected materials, pushed to a concentration that the commercial fragrance industry rarely approached. L'Air du Désert Marocain was his argument for what a one-person niche operation could produce that the established industry could not.
The composition is built on a warm, resinous amber accord constructed from benzyl benzoate, ethylene brassylate, and a vetiver absolute that together create a quality that is simultaneously dry, sweet, and mineral. Cedarwood, cistus, and frankincense add smoky and resinous depth; a touch of rose and jasmine provide a floral warmth that prevents the composition from reading as purely abstract. The overall effect evokes desert air with a specificity that most "desert" fragrances never achieve — not the romance of sand dunes but the actual smell of warm stone, resin, and distance.
L'Air du Désert Marocain became foundational within the independent niche movement that was developing in parallel with the commercial niche houses during the mid-2000s. It demonstrated that a single perfumer, working without the infrastructure of a major house, could produce a fragrance of world-class quality — and that the internet had created the distribution infrastructure to find the audience for it. Andy Tauer became a model for the artisan perfumer, and L'Air du Désert Marocain the fragrance that proved the model was viable.

Application Tips
Apply this fragrance to your pulse points for the best effect. It has a strong opening that fades into its rich base notes over time, so one or two sprays are sufficient. Allow it to settle before leaving the house to fully appreciate its evolving layers.
