The Story

Bigarade Concentrée by Frederic Malle was launched in 2002 as a bold statement from perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. The composition opens with a sharp burst of bitter orange and mandarin, punctuated by the freshness of grapefruit and tea. As it evolves, cardamom and pink pepper introduce a spicy warmth that contrasts beautifully against the citrus notes. The heart unfolds with rose, honeysuckle, and orris, adding layers of floral complexity before settling into a woody base of cedar and musk. This fragrance captures the essence of a crisp, invigorating day — fresh, vibrant, and slightly unpredictable.

Application Tips

Apply Bigarade Concentrée liberally to capture its full vibrancy. The citrus top notes are fleeting, lasting only about 20 minutes before giving way to the spicier heart and woody base. This makes it perfect for daytime wear when you want a scent that feels fresh and engaging throughout the day.

Jean-Claude Ellena portrait

As a disciple and close friend of the legendary Edmond Roudnitska (creator of “Le Parfum de Thérèse”), Jean-Claude Ellena began his career with a minimalistic approach to perfumery. Since then, he has developed this approach into his own distinctive style, which is continually informed by his elegant and quiet way of being, and has been compared by his contemporaries to watercolor sketches and chamber music. Jean-Claude says that a perfume must be like “a soft caress; nothing must shock, nothing must shout”.Jean-Claude Ellena was born in Grasse into a family of perfumers. His training began at age 17, in the most prestigious laboratories – in Grasse, Paris, New York and Geneva – where he always saw himself as self-taught. Roudnitska’s minimalism never left him, however, and his compositions remain focused around a single ingredient, avoiding repetition.
