The Story

When Chanel launched Égoïste in 1990, it was marketing a fragrance named Selfish — and doing so without irony. Jacques Polge had created a composition so dark, so warm, and so defiantly unfashionable that Chanel initially considered it uncommercial. The advertising campaign, featuring women screaming from hotel balconies in rage or desire, leaned into the provocation. But Égoïste's true radicalism was olfactory, not conceptual. At a time when masculine fragrance was dominated by fresh fougères and cool aquatics, Polge delivered a dense, spiced, rose-sandalwood oriental that smelled like a Victorian drawing room — pipe tobacco, polished wood, and something darkly, almost uncomfortably intimate.

The composition opens with a restrained citrus accord before plunging into its famous heart: Bulgarian rose, coriander, cinnamon, and clove wrapped around a massive sandalwood core. The sandalwood is the fragrance's defining feature — rich, creamy, and almost animalic in its warmth, it provides a depth that most masculines of the era never attempted. Vanilla, amber, and precious woods in the base extend the warmth into a drydown that can last for hours, close to the skin, quietly radiating. There is no freshness to relieve the density, no aquatic transparency to lighten the mood. Égoïste is warm from first spray to final trace, and it makes no concessions to approachability.

Égoïste was never a massive commercial success — Platinum Égoïste, the lighter, more accessible flanker, outsold it significantly — but its reputation among fragrance enthusiasts has grown steadily over the decades. It is frequently cited as one of the finest masculines ever produced, a composition that prioritised artistic conviction over market research. In retrospect, Égoïste anticipated the niche movement's embrace of bold, uncompromising compositions by nearly two decades. It proved that selfishness, in perfumery as in life, could be its own form of integrity.
