The Story

Launched in 2003, Escada Magnetism is a fragrance that has carved out an enduring niche despite the brand's frequent pattern of discontinuing scents soon after release. Created by perfumers Pierre Bourdon and Steve DeMercado, it opens with vibrant red berries and black currant, which mingle with green leaves and basil to create an initial burst of freshness. This gives way to a heart that balances floral notes like jasmine and magnolia with the warmth of vanilla and caramel. The base is woody and sensual, with patchouli, sandalwood, and musk grounding the composition in rich depth.

Magnetism has maintained its cult status for over two decades, partly because it survived long enough to build a dedicated following. It's often praised by reviewers as smelling more expensive than its price point suggests, which adds to its charm.

Application Tips

Apply Magnetism to pulse points for a long-lasting effect. The fragrance opens up quickly with bright top notes but builds gradually into its warmer base accords over the first hour or so. It's best experienced close to skin rather than from across a room.

Pierre Bourdon portrait

As Edmond Roudnitska’s only student, Pierre Bourdon was informed early on by the philosophy that perfumes should be created as works of art. With this in mind, Pierre went on to revolutionize perfume trends in the 1980s with his men’s perfume “Cool Water” for Davidoff. That was when he met Frédéric Malle. Having realized that they shared the same vision of perfume making, the two became like family to one another. It was obvious to Frédéric, when he created Editions de Parfums, that Pierre should compose its first perfume, Iris Poudre.
