The Story

Jean-Claude Ellena composed Le Jardin de Monsieur Li in 2015 as a vivid memory of his visit to China. The fragrance captures the essence of ponds, jasmine blossoms, wet stones, plum trees, kumquats, and giant bamboos. It's the mildest entry in Hermès’s Jardin series, with some enthusiasts praising its delicate jasmine-kumquat construction while others find it too similar to Jour d'Hermès or unremarkable. The composition opens with a bright citrus-aromatic accord that gives way to a heart of white florals and fresh spices, settling into a base that is both green and subtly spicy.

Application Tips

Le Jardin de Monsieur Li has a delicate presence that requires only one or two sprays for optimal effect. The citrus notes are quick to dissipate, but the white florals and green nuances linger softly throughout the day. Best applied in the morning for a gentle, all-day scent.

Jean-Claude Ellena portrait

As a disciple and close friend of the legendary Edmond Roudnitska (creator of “Le Parfum de Thérèse”), Jean-Claude Ellena began his career with a minimalistic approach to perfumery. Since then, he has developed this approach into his own distinctive style, which is continually informed by his elegant and quiet way of being, and has been compared by his contemporaries to watercolor sketches and chamber music. Jean-Claude says that a perfume must be like “a soft caress; nothing must shock, nothing must shout”.Jean-Claude Ellena was born in Grasse into a family of perfumers. His training began at age 17, in the most prestigious laboratories – in Grasse, Paris, New York and Geneva – where he always saw himself as self-taught. Roudnitska’s minimalism never left him, however, and his compositions remain focused around a single ingredient, avoiding repetition.
