The story behind the bottle.
Launched in 2015 by Maison Martin Margiela, By the Fireplace is a woody fragrance created by Marie Salamagne. This composition balances warm spices and powdery notes with rich balsamic and vanilla accords, evoking the cozy ambiance of a winter evening spent by a crackling fire. Cloves and pink pepper introduce a subtle spicy tension before giving way to chestnut and guaiac wood, which read as comforting earthiness. The base notes of vanilla, peru balsam, and cashmeran add layers of warmth and depth, making this fragrance feel like an intimate embrace.
Apply By the Fireplace in layers for best effect — it blooms slowly over time. The spicy top notes are brief but impactful, while the warm base notes linger close to skin, so keep reapplications light once you’ve built up the scent on your skin.
