The Quick Read

Respected, if divisive — a citrus, woody composition with a fresh spicy undertone. Voted best for spring and fall wear — and genuinely unisex.

The Story

No.12 Bousval by Maison Louis Marie was launched in 2021, crafted by perfumer Marie du Petit Thouars. This aromatic fougère composition opens with Sicilian bergamot and white cardamom, creating a bright and fresh top note. The heart of the fragrance is anchored by white ginger lily and heliotrope, adding a floral warmth that contrasts beautifully against the crispness of eucalyptus and petitgrain. The base notes of oakmoss, cedar, myrrh, and amber provide an earthy, woody depth that grounds the entire composition.

Application Tips

No.12 Bousval's top notes are vibrant but fleeting, so apply two sprays initially to ensure you catch that fresh opening. The warm base notes develop over time, making it a fragrance that reads differently throughout the day — best enjoyed close to skin rather than from across the room.

Marie du Petit Thouars portrait

Marie du Petit Thouars began her career as a fashion editor for the London Sunday Times before becoming a fine art fashion photographer in Los Angeles. Growing up in Belgium, where her grandfather was a botanist, she made candles and experimented with scent in her mother's greenhouse; she is descended from Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars, a botanist exiled to Madagascar and Mauritius during the French Revolution who collected over 2000 plant specimens. She launched the fragrance house Maison Louis Marie, named for her ancestor, drawing on this botanical heritage.
