Ralph Lauren launched Polo in 1978, and the fragrance immediately became inseparable from the brand mythology it was designed to serve. This was not merely a men's fragrance — it was a lifestyle proposition, an olfactory extension of the polo matches, preppy blazers, and old-money aspiration that Lauren had built his empire upon. Created by Carlos Benaïm, the composition was a rich, green, leathery fougère that smelled like everything the Polo customer wanted to be: outdoorsy but refined, masculine but cultured, American but continental. The dark green bottle and gold cap communicated the same message: this was fragrance as class signifier.
The composition opens with a burst of artemisia, basil, caraway, coriander, and thyme — an herbal accord of considerable complexity that immediately separates Polo from simpler citrus-forward masculines of the era. The heart introduces carnation, chamomile, jasmine, pine, and rose in a combination that adds warmth and a subtle floral quality, while the base of leather, oakmoss, patchouli, tobacco, and vetiver creates a dark, mossy foundation of extraordinary depth. The leather note is Polo's signature: rich, slightly smoky, and undeniably luxurious, it gives the fragrance its masculine gravitas and distinguishes it from the lighter, greener compositions that would populate the genre in subsequent decades. Polo is a fragrance of layers, each revealing itself slowly over hours of wear.
Polo became one of the best-selling men's fragrances of the 1980s and helped establish the designer fragrance as a cornerstone of fashion brand strategy. Its significance extends beyond commercial success to cultural influence: Polo was among the first fragrances to be marketed not as a personal grooming product but as an entry point into a lifestyle — a concept that every designer fragrance brand has since adopted. The green, leathery fougère it epitomised has fallen in and out of fashion repeatedly, but Polo itself has never been discontinued, its dark bottle occupying counter space in department stores four decades after its launch. It remains the smell of American aspiration — or at least of one particularly compelling version of it.

Application Tips
Apply Polo in light spritzes to allow its complex notes to unfold gradually throughout the day. The rich base takes about an hour to fully emerge, so give it time before reapplying. It pairs best with daytime activities where you want a subtle but enduring presence.
