The Story

Launched in 2003 by Hermès, Un Jardin en Méditerranée was Jean-Claude Ellena's first creation for the house. Inspired by the Tunisian garden of Leïla Menchari, Hermès' longtime director of window displays, this fragrance embodies the essence of a Mediterranean landscape. The composition opens with bright citrus notes — bergamot, lemon, and mandarin orange — before transitioning to white nerium oleander and orange blossom, which evoke the lush greenery and blooming flowers of the region. Cypress, red cedar, juniper, and fig leaf add an earthy warmth, while pistachio and musk lend a subtle sweetness that rounds out the scent. Un Jardin en Méditerranée not only launched Hermès' influential 'Un Jardin' series but also marked a turning point in the industry by elevating the perfumer to the status of artist.

Application Tips

This fragrance blooms beautifully over time — apply it lightly to your pulse points in the morning for an all-day experience. The citrus top notes are bright but fleeting, so a second application may be needed later in the day to maintain its full character.

Jean-Claude Ellena portrait

As a disciple and close friend of the legendary Edmond Roudnitska (creator of “Le Parfum de Thérèse”), Jean-Claude Ellena began his career with a minimalistic approach to perfumery. Since then, he has developed this approach into his own distinctive style, which is continually informed by his elegant and quiet way of being, and has been compared by his contemporaries to watercolor sketches and chamber music. Jean-Claude says that a perfume must be like “a soft caress; nothing must shock, nothing must shout”.Jean-Claude Ellena was born in Grasse into a family of perfumers. His training began at age 17, in the most prestigious laboratories – in Grasse, Paris, New York and Geneva – where he always saw himself as self-taught. Roudnitska’s minimalism never left him, however, and his compositions remain focused around a single ingredient, avoiding repetition.
