Desmond Knox-Leet

The Artist

Desmond Knox-Leet, an English painter and graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts, co-founded Diptyque in 1961 with French designers Yves Coueslant and Christiane Gautrot, originally as a boutique for fabrics and handmade crafts. He pitched the idea of creating original scents and composed Diptyque's first eau de toilette, L'Eau, based on a 16th-century formula, mixing raw materials as a painter would prepare a palette until his death in a surgical accident in 1993.
