Patricia de Nicolaï, great-granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain and niece of Jean-Paul Guerlain, studied chemistry before training at ISIPCA in Versailles.
Despite facing gender discrimination early in her career, she worked at Florasynth and Quest International, collaborating with Sophia Grojsman on Lancôme's Trésor, before launching her own house, Parfums de Nicolaï, with her husband Jean-Louis Michau in 1988. She won the International Prize for Young Perfumers that same year, was made a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour in 2008, and serves as president of the Osmothèque scent archive.
