The Story

Launched in 2007 by Chanel, Bois des Iles is a composition that blends the alchemical expertise of perfumer Ernest Beaux with the brand's signature elegance. The fragrance opens with aldehydes and citrus notes — bergamot and mandarin orange — creating an initial freshness that feels crisp yet refined. This bright beginning gives way to the heart, where iris and jasmine provide soft floral warmth, while ylang-ylang adds a touch of sweetness. As Bois des Iles settles into its base, it becomes a study in powdery woods and amber, with notes like sandalwood, benzoin, and vanilla creating a warm embrace that feels both comforting and sophisticated.

Application Tips

Bois des Iles has a moderate sillage that fades subtly over time. Two sprays to the pulse points will allow the fragrance to develop fully on skin throughout the day. It pairs well with cooler weather, where its warm base notes feel particularly comforting.

Ernest Beaux portrait
I presented Mademoiselle Chanel with samples numbered one through five, and twenty through twenty-four. She chose number five.

Ernest Beaux is the perfumer who changed everything. Born in Moscow to a Franco-Russian family, he served as an officer in World War I before entering the laboratories of A. Rallet & Co. in Grasse. In 1921, he presented Coco Chanel with a series of experimental samples — and sample number five became Chanel No. 5, arguably the most famous fragrance ever created. By boldly incorporating synthetic aldehydes into a floral bouquet, Beaux shattered the conventions of natural perfumery and ushered in the modern age. His legacy is not merely a fragrance but an entirely new way of thinking about scent.
