Launched in 1922 by Chanel and created by perfumer Ernest Beaux, N°22 is a floral aldehyde fragrance that marked a significant moment in the history of women's fragrances. It was one of the first to blend white florals with aldehydes, creating an aroma that was both fresh and sophisticated. The composition opens with a bright aldehydic note, giving way to a heart of lily-of-the-valley, tuberose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang. A base of iris and vanilla rounds out the scent, adding depth and warmth. N°22 is renowned for its ability to capture the essence of elegance and modernity that Gabrielle Chanel championed.

Application Tips
N°22 has long-lasting qualities but a moderate sillage, so apply it to pulse points for maximum impact. It pairs well with a light layering of powder or cream to enhance its powdery undertones.

“I presented Mademoiselle Chanel with samples numbered one through five, and twenty through twenty-four. She chose number five.”
Ernest Beaux is the perfumer who changed everything. Born in Moscow to a Franco-Russian family, he served as an officer in World War I before entering the laboratories of A. Rallet & Co. in Grasse. In 1921, he presented Coco Chanel with a series of experimental samples — and sample number five became Chanel No. 5, arguably the most famous fragrance ever created. By boldly incorporating synthetic aldehydes into a floral bouquet, Beaux shattered the conventions of natural perfumery and ushered in the modern age. His legacy is not merely a fragrance but an entirely new way of thinking about scent.
