The Story

Eau des Merveilles by Hermès was launched in 2004 as a genuinely innovative fragrance for women. Created by perfumers Nathalie Feisthauer and Ralf Schwieger, it broke from the traditional floral-centric approach of feminine fragrances with its woody-amber structure. Unlike typical compositions that introduce woody and amber notes only in the base, Eau des Merveilles features an amber accord prominently throughout its composition. This distinctive approach has made it a benchmark entry point into 'woody' fragrances for newcomers.

The fragrance opens with bright citrus and elemi resin, which quickly gives way to warm amber and spicy nuances of pepper and pink pepper. The heart notes introduce violet and fir, adding depth and complexity before settling into a base of cedar, vetiver, oakmoss, and benzoin. This structure has not only garnered critical acclaim but also spawned several successful flankers, cementing its place in the fragrance world.

Application Tips

Given its long-lasting nature and strong sillage, one or two sprays are sufficient to make an impression. The amber accord is present from the start, so there’s no need to wait for it to develop — enjoy its warmth right away.
