Guerlain launched Habit Rouge in 1965, and with it created what is widely considered the first oriental fragrance designed specifically for men. Before Habit Rouge, the oriental family — vanilla, amber, incense, spice — was coded exclusively feminine. Men wore citrus, fougères, and leathers. Jacques Guerlain's grandson Jean-Paul Guerlain broke that convention with a composition that married the warmth and sweetness of vanilla and amber with the sharpness of citrus and the dryness of leather, producing a masculine oriental that the market had never seen and did not know it wanted.
The composition opens with a bright, classical accord of lemon, bergamot, orange, and basil that could belong to any mid-century masculine cologne. But the heart quickly signals that something different is happening: carnation, rose, cinnamon, and patchouli introduce a spiced floral warmth that pushes the fragrance beyond the cologne tradition and into richer territory. The base of vanilla, amber, benzoin, leather, and sandalwood is where Habit Rouge makes its argument: this is unambiguously sweet and warm, but the leather note — dry, slightly smoky, vaguely equestrian — provides the masculine anchor that prevents the composition from drifting into feminine territory. The result is a fragrance of perfect balance: oriental enough to be revolutionary, structured enough to be worn with confidence.
Habit Rouge's influence on masculine perfumery is difficult to overstate, though it is often overlooked in favour of louder successors. It opened the door for every warm, sweet, amber-based masculine that followed — from Opium Pour Homme to Tobacco Vanille — and it established Guerlain's reputation for pushing masculine fragrance into territory that other houses considered too risky. The Eau de Toilette concentration remains the most faithful to Jean-Paul Guerlain's original vision: lighter than the EDP, more transparent, and with a leather note that breathes rather than suffocates. Sixty years after its creation, Habit Rouge still smells like the future someone imagined in 1965 — refined, daring, and completely assured.

Application Tips
Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette has a bright opening that fades within two hours. Afterward, the warm spicy and amber notes take center stage, so it's best to apply one or two sprays in the morning for a steady presence throughout the day.

“I am the last Guerlain to make perfume. After me, the house continues — but the family chapter closes.”
Jean-Paul Guerlain is the fourth and final generation of Guerlain family perfumers, a lineage that spans nearly two centuries of French fragrance history. Taking the creative helm of the house in 1955, he continued the family's tradition of creating deeply personal, emotionally rich fragrances. His masterpieces — Habit Rouge, Vétiver, Samsara, and Héritage — are cornerstones of the perfume canon. Jean-Paul brought a more modern, sometimes daring sensibility to the Guerlain tradition, while always maintaining the house's legendary commitment to the finest raw materials.
