The story behind the bottle.

Scentsation editorial

Paul Kiler built Rhinoceros in 2014 for Zoologist Perfumes, a Canadian house that sets out to translate animal idiosyncrasy into scent — and this one reads like a study in thick skin. The opening is sharp and almost medicinal: pine needles, artemisia, sage, and elemi create a coniferous, resinous top that smells like walking through a spruce forest in late autumn. Then the rum arrives — boozy, warm, slightly dangerous — and pulls everything down into a base of leather, oud, tobacco, and amber so dense it feels like a different fragrance entirely.

The contrast is the point. Rhinoceros doesn't resolve its tension; it holds the herbal bite and the animalic weight in the same breath. It is unbothered, ancient, and a little bit shocking in the way the brand promises — not loud, but impossible to ignore once it's on your skin.

How to wear it

The herbal top — pine, artemisia, sage — is sharp but brief, gone within the first twenty minutes, so don't judge it by the opening. The leather-oud-tobacco base is the real story and takes an hour to settle in; give it time. Moderate sillage means it stays close to skin, so one or two sprays on the chest is enough; it'll be there all day without filling a room.
