Jean-Francois
Laporte

The founder of niche perfumery

Jean-François Laporte was a French perfumer born in 1948 who founded Sisley in 1972, later selling it to Count Hubert d'Ornano, before establishing L'Artisan Parfumeur in 1976 — one of the first niche fragrance houses — offering an alternative to mass-market perfume through rare and unusual materials like celery, ginger, basil, and osmanthus.

Jean-Francois's story

The story

In 1988 he founded Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, continuing to work with traditional recipes and inventive presentations such as fragrant body waxes. He regarded perfumery as an art form, telling stories of forgotten times through scent, and continued exploring the craft through his foundation Le Jardin du Parfumeur until his death in 2011.
