René Morgenthaler began his career with an apprenticeship in chemistry at Givaudan in his native Geneva, earning a place at the newly established Givaudan Perfumery School.
He rose through postings in Switzerland, Argentina, and the United States to become Senior Vice President and Chief Perfumer at Givaudan from 1989 to 2001, later leading the Fragrance Catalogue for Givaudan Access. After retiring in 2003, he continued consulting for Mane and Manheimer before co-founding Smart Fragrances LLC in 2009.
