Who Wears It
The story behind the bottle.
The tension in Diorling lives in the gap between Calabrian bergamot and a base of leather and patchouli that could not be more different. François Demachy built this 2012 reedition around that contrast — a chypre structure where the citrus cuts through the animalic warmth below, while Egyptian jasmine in the heart keeps the whole thing from tipping into something too dark. The original Diorling, part of Dior's Les Creations de Monsieur Dior collection, carried the tag of 'English refinement,' and Demachy's version holds onto that restrained, slightly formal character while letting the leather read more contemporary.
What makes it work is the balance: the bergamot is bright enough to feel like a clean pour, but the patchouli and leather pull it back into something that belongs in a leather armchair with a glass of something amber. Moderate sillage means it stays personal — a scent you notice on your own wrist rather than one that announces itself across a room.
Two sprays on the wrist is enough — the moderate sillage means this is a scent you smell on yourself, not one that projects across a room. The bergamot gives you the first ten minutes of brightness, but the real story is the leather and patchouli base, which needs thirty minutes or more to settle into the jasmine heart. Layer it under a wool coat in autumn and it reads as quietly luxurious.
