The Quick Read
Respected, if divisive — a woody, fresh spicy composition with a floral undertone. Voted best for fall and winter wear — and genuinely unisex.

Roan on Fire, launched by D. Grayi in 2026 and crafted by perfumer James Nguyen, is a composition that weaves together the complexity of woods, spices, florals, and sweet notes into a compelling narrative. The fragrance opens with red maple and fenugreek, creating an initial warmth that transitions seamlessly into the rich layers of cherry, bark, and rum. Osmanthus and hawthorn bring a floral sweetness to the heart, while cypress and pomelo lend a fresh, green contrast. As it settles, birch tar and agarwood introduce a smoky depth, supported by benzoin and hay, culminating in an amber-oud base that exudes both warmth and sophistication.

Application Tips
One or two sprays are sufficient — this fragrance blooms gradually over time. The top notes fade within an hour but give way to a rich and enduring base. It reads better close to skin than when sprayed liberally across a room.

James "Miju" Nguyen is a Vietnamese American perfumer who spent over 15 years working in hair color before chemical allergies from that industry left him fearing fragrance altogether. Finding relief in natural products, he grew curious about scent and taught himself cosmetic chemistry, eventually founding LV1 / LEVEL 1 STUDIO with Kael Jeong. His brand d.grayi creates olfactive art rooted in Vietnamese and Korean heritage, reimagined through a queer, contemporary lens, with a body of over 50 fragrances.
