Fall Fragrances by the Numbers

What people actually reach for when the weather turns, from their own season votes

Every fall the same advice goes around: switch to something warmer. We wanted to know what that actually means, so we looked at how wearers vote. Each fragrance in our catalog carries votes on the seasons it suits best, and across the 2,982 fragrances with at least 1,000 ratings and season votes, those votes tell a clear story.

Fall is a favourite season, not an afterthought

Spread across all four seasons, the average fragrance gets 28% of its season votes for spring, 27% for fall, 23% for summer and 22% for winter. The two in-between seasons win. That makes sense once you think about it: mild weather is when almost anything works, so people wear more of their collection, and they vote for it.

So fall isn't a narrow slot for heavy scents. It's one of the two seasons when people are most willing to wear fragrance at all, which is why so many popular releases end up voted best for it.

The accords that mean fall

We grouped fragrances by their three strongest accords and averaged how much of their season vote goes to fall. Fragrances built on tobacco send 38% of their season votes to fall, the highest of any accord. Then come smoky (37%), leather (37%), oud (36%), warm spicy (36%) and amber (35%). Caramel, patchouli, honey and earthy accords sit just behind.

At the other end, aquatic fragrances send only 14% of their votes to fall, marine and fresh 16%, green 18%. Citrus manages 20%. If your summer favourite is built on sea notes and lemon (the kind that smells like the ocean), the votes suggest it's the one to rest first.

Tobacco, smoke and leather are the accords most tied to fall. Aquatic, marine and fresh are the least.

Notice what sits in the middle: woody (30%), vanilla (32%) and powdery (29%). These are the bridge accords, the ones people wear on both sides of the season line.

The most-rated fragrances voted best for fall

Among fragrances with at least 5,000 ratings, these are the most widely rated ones whose single best season, by votes, is fall:

It's a mixed list on purpose. Encre Noire is vetiver and dark woods. Narciso Rodriguez For Her is musk and powder. Lost Cherry is cherry, almond and sweetness. Fall isn't one smell; it's a register. Each of these is a little denser and warmer than its summer equivalent.

The most fall-leaning of all

Some fragrances lean into fall far harder than the average 27%. Among fragrances with 1,000 or more ratings, the most fall-heavy by share of votes include:

Autumn Vibes at 62%, which at least lives up to its name. Whispers in the Library at 46%, Cuir de Lancôme and Memoirs of a Trespasser at 45%, and Fumerie Turque and Daim Blond at 44%.

Read the accords and they match the pattern above: woods, leather, tobacco, warm spices, vanilla. Serge Lutens appears twice.

How to use this

If you own one fragrance for the season change, the data points at a woody or amber scent with some spice: warm enough for a cold evening, not so heavy it smothers you at noon. For the full fall mood, start with perfumes that smell like a campfire, tobacco or leather.

If you already have a summer rotation, swap the aquatics first and keep the citrus-woods; they cross over better than the votes for pure citrus suggest.

And if you want to explore, start from an accord rather than a bottle. Browse the fall picks, or describe what you want in plain words with scent search: "smoky but not heavy" works.

A note on method: season votes come from wearers, and older records store them as relative bar heights while newer ones store raw counts. We convert both to shares of each fragrance's own vote before averaging, so a heavily voted fragrance doesn't drown out the rest.
