Your First Five Bottles

A small wardrobe that covers most days, built from fragrances wearers love across the seasons

Most people's first fragrances arrive by accident: a gift, a duty-free impulse, whatever a friend wears. That's how you end up with three bottles that smell alike and nothing for a summer afternoon. Five bottles in five different families will cover more of your life than twenty that smell alike.

Here's a starting wardrobe built on data rather than ads. Every suggestion has at least 8,000 ratings and a score of 4.0 or better, and, importantly, is voted for at least three seasons. These are fragrances people actually wear, not just admire. For each role there's a pick that most wearers call masculine and one most call feminine; wear whichever you like.

1. A fresh everyday

The one you reach for without thinking: work, errands, warm days.

Terre d'Hermès is citrus over woods and a mineral, flinty edge, rated 4.28 across more than 27,000 ratings. Coco Mademoiselle is citrus over patchouli, polished and bright, with more than 32,000 ratings.

2. A woody all-rounder

Something with more depth that still works at noon.

Five bottles in five different families will cover more of your life than twenty that smell alike.

Montblanc Explorer is woody, citrus and aromatic, rated 4.24 across more than 16,000 ratings. Bois Impérial is a dry, fresh-spicy woody scent that wearers split almost evenly between masculine and unisex, so it's a good one to share. For a feminine-leaning woody pick, Born in Roma adds vanilla and fruit.

3. Something warm for evenings

Amber and spice for colder nights and occasions.

Layton is apple, lavender, vanilla and spice, rated 4.45. It's expensive, so it's worth seeing its similar alternatives before buying. Dylan Blue is an easier, more affordable warm-fresh option. On the feminine side, Mon Guerlain brings lavender and vanilla with real elegance.

4. A floral or soft signature

The one that feels like you on a good day.

Pure Poison is a clean white floral over citrus and woods, voted for three seasons or more. If florals aren't your thing, treat this slot as "your soft one": a musk or an iris, something quieter than everything else you own.

5. A sweet comfort scent

Gourmands are the most divisive family and the most comforting. One is enough.

Versace Eros is mint, vanilla and tonka, loud and cheerful, with nearly 30,000 ratings. Love, Don't Be Shy is marshmallow-sweet orange blossom and vanilla.

Before you buy any of them

Sample first. A decant or a tester costs very little next to a full bottle, and a fragrance that's well loved on average can still be wrong on you. Wear it for a full day before deciding; the opening is the least important part.

Spread your five across families rather than price. One affordable bottle you wear every day is worth more than one expensive bottle you save for occasions.

And if you're not sure where to start, the Scent Finder takes five questions, including one about a fragrance you already love, and shows why each suggestion matched.
