The story behind the bottle.

Scentsation editorial

Launched in 2004 by Serge Lutens and crafted by Christopher Sheldrake, Chene is a woody fragrance that embodies the essence of aged wood and smoky leather. The composition opens with an aromatic herbal blend, which quickly gives way to the rich warmth of rum and sweet spices. This juxtaposition creates a tension between the crispness of the top notes and the enveloping depth of the base, making Chene both modern and lasting.

How to wear it

Chene is best applied in thin layers — its rich base notes take time to develop fully. The rum and warm spices are most noticeable close to skin, so aim for pulse points rather than a heavy spray. Ideal for evenings when you want a scent that evolves with the mood.
